WE CAN trust god
Lesson: God can do anything and because He loves us we can trust Him as our Savior.
Bible Passage: John 6:1-12, The Feeding of the 5,000
Today’s story comes to us from the Bible. (Hold up a Bible.) The Bible is God’s word to us, so we know that everything it says is true. (Open the Bible and set it down in front of you as you give the lesson.)
The Bible is filled with Big Stories of the Big God that we serve. One of those is the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000.
Wherever Jesus went, people would follow. They wanted to hear him speak. They wanted to see him perform miracles. One day, a large crowd was gathered outside the city. There were over 5,000 people with Jesus.
The people were hungry. Jesus loved the people; he wanted to help them. Jesus said, “Let us give everyone something to eat.” Jesus’ disciple Philip said, “We don’t have enough money to buy food for all of these people.”
There was a little kid in the crowd. He has 5 small loaves of bread and 2 fish. He offered them to Jesus. Jesus took the 5 small loaves of bread and 2 fish; he prayed a blessing over them. Jesus broke the 5 small loaves of bread and 2 fish, and gave it to his disciples to pass out.
The food grew and multiplied. Everyone had enough to eat. There was even food left over. All from the little boy’s 5 small loaves of bread and 2 fish.
God can do anything. Because He loves us we can trust him as our Savior.
Simple Prayer:
Dear God, You can do anything. You love us. We trust you. Amen
Discussion Questions:
Wiggle Tamer: Play a quick game of Follow The Leader.
Small Group Memory Verse: Have kids say the verse together in a variety of positions: standing, sitting, bowing, standing on one foot, jumping, etc.
Questions: Who did the people go out to see? What food did the little boy have? Was there enough food for everyone? Is there anything God cannot do?
Game: Place a blindfold on one child. Lead them around your space, as the other kids sit on the floor and serve as obstacles. Keep an eye out, as your “obstacles” might have a tough time staying in one place. Encourage the blindfolded child to trust you. Praise them for the good job they are doing. Talk about how hard it is to trust sometimes, but that we can always trust God.
Make this week’s lesson real:
At Dinner: During mealtime, thank God that your family has enough food to eat. Talk about how Jesus multiplied the little boy’s lunch of 5 small loaves of bread and 2 fish, so that over 5,000 people could have enough to eat.
Playing: Try some games that require a little trust: leading little ones around blindfolded, trust falls, etc. Talk about what it means to trust someone. Remind your kids that they can always trust God.
Bedtime: At bedtime, read some of the stories of Jesus from a picture book or child-friendly version of the Bible. Talk about Jesus’ love and power. Talk to your little ones about what it means to trust Him as their Savior.
Arts & Craft:
Items Needed: Wax paper, black construction paper, multi-colored tissue paper, tape, iron
Advanced Preparation: Cut an opening in the black construction paper in the shape of a cross. (You will need two sheets for each child. The cross should be the same size/location on each sheet.) Tape a piece of wax paper onto each paper to cover the hole.
Directions: Give each child one of the cross sheets. The cross reminds us of Jesus and that we can trust Him as our Savior. Have the kids tear or cut pieces of tissue paper to cover over the cross. Once all of the empty spaces have been filled, cover with another cross sheet. Have an adult apply an iron to the sheet. The wax paper should melt slightly and fuse together. Finish by taping the two sheets together. (If you’d rather not handle a hot iron, you can tape or glue stick the tissue paper pieces in place before adding the cover sheet.)
