Christmas Is All About Jesus’ Love
Lesson: “Jesus left Heaven and came to earth because He loves me.”
Bible Passage: Luke 2:1-7, Jesus is Born
Memory Verse: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you.” Luke 2:11a (NIrV)
Today’s story comes to us from the Bible. (Hold up a Bible.) The Bible is God’s word to us, so we know that everything it says is true. (Open the Bible and set it down in front of you as you give the lesson.)
For the next few weeks, we are going to talk about Christmas. Christmas is when we celebrate Jesus’ birthday.
Jesus loves us. Jesus left heaven and came to earth because he loves us.
Joseph and Mary went to the town of Bethlehem. There was no room for them, so they stayed in a barn. Mary gave birth to Jesus. That’s where Jesus spent his birthday – in a barn with some stinky animals.
But he didn’t mind, because Jesus came for us. Jesus came to save us. Jesus loves every person on earth so much, he was willing to give up everything for us.
At Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ birth and we remember that Jesus loves us so much.
Simple Prayer:
Dear God, Thank you for giving us Jesus and showing us how much you love us. Amen.
Discussion Questions:
Wiggle Tamer: Play a few rounds of Follow the Leader.
Small Group Memory Verse: Ask for little ones to raise their hands if they think they know the verse. Select several kids with raised hands to recite the verse.
Questions: Whose birthday do we celebrate at Christmas? Where was Jesus born? Why did Jesus give up heaven to be born on earth?
Game: Have kids practice tracing big heart shapes in the air with their hands. As they make each heart, have them say someone that they love.
Arts & Craft: Jesus’ Birthday
Items Needed: Red, pink and white paper hearts, marker, crayons, tape or other adhesive
Advanced Prep: Cut paper hearts of varying sizes from card stock or other heavy paper. In marker write, “Jesus loves” on each heart.
Directions: Remind kids that Christmas is when we celebrate Jesus’ love. Show them that the hearts read, “Jesus loves.” Give kids a heart and ask them to write their name in crayon under “loves.”
Tell the kids that you are going to use the hearts to decorate the room for Jesus’ big birthday party. Place tape or other adhesive to the back or each heart, and have kids affix their heart to the wall. Have extra hearts on hand for kids to put on the walls to fill out the decoration.
