We Can Follow God
Lesson: God is bigger than anything and because He loves us we can follow Him.
Bible Passage: Exodus 14:10-25, Parting of the Red Sea
Today’s story comes to us from the Bible. (Hold up a Bible.) The Bible is God’s word to us, so we know that everything it says is true. (Open the Bible and set it down in front of you as you give the lesson.)
The Bible is filled with Big Stories of the Big God that we serve. One of those is the story of God’s people, the Israelites.
Moses and the Israelites were on their way to their new home. The Egyptians were after them; they wanted to take the Israelites back to Egypt.
The Israelites came to the Red Sea. There was no way to get around the water. There was no way to go over the water or under the water. The Egyptians were getting closer. What could they do?
God told Moses, “Lift up your staff.” Moses lifted up his staff. The water of the Red Sea started to divide in half. The Israelites were able to walk across – there was no more water there, only dry ground. The people reached the other side.
When everyone was across, God told Moses, “Lower your staff.” Moses lowered his staff. The water came back, filling up the Red Sea again.
God saved the Israelites. God is bigger than anything we face. Because He loves us we can obey him. We can follow God anywhere.
Simple Prayer:
Dear God, You are big. You love us. We want to follow you. Amen
Discussion Questions:
Wiggle Tamer: Play a few rounds of “Simon Says.” Remind the kids that God loves us. When he says something we can follow him.
Small Group Memory Verse: Say the verse together several times. Talk about the verse’s meaning.
Questions: Who were the Israelites? What did God tell Moses to do? What happened to the water of the Red Sea? Can we trust God and follow him?
Game: Reenact today’s story. Lay out blue rugs or large pieces of felt to represent the water of the Red Sea. Roll up the rugs to show the waters of the Red Sea receding.
Make this week’s lesson real:
At Dinner: During your mealtime prayer, thank God for his great love and his great power.
Playing: Try a game that involves following some simple rules. Talk to your little ones about why it’s important to follow the rules of the game. What are some rules that God wants us to follow in life? Why should we follow God’s rules?
Bedtime: Cuddle up with your little ones and tell them how much you love them. Remind them that God loves them deeply. Pray that God would help both of you to feel and experience His great love.ople.
Arts & Craft:
Items Needed: Craft or brown construction paper, tape, crayons, stickers
Directions: Have little ones roll craft paper into a long tube. Help them tape the tube secure. This is their staff, like the one Moses had in the story. (If using construction paper, you will have to tape several tubes together to get the desired height.) Give them an opportunity to decorate it with crayon or stickers. Instruct little ones in the proper uses of a staff – support, pointing, parting seas – as well as ways they are not allowed to use their staffs – hitting, hurting, etc. Encourage them when they look at the staff to think about God’s love and how He helped Moses and the Israelites.
