WE CAN obey god

Lesson: God is greater than anything and because He loves us we can obey Him.
Bible Passage: Joshua 6:1-20, The Fall of Jericho

Today’s story comes to us from the Bible. (Hold up a Bible.) The Bible is God’s word to us, so we know that everything it says is true. (Open the Bible and set it down in front of you as you give the lesson.)

The Bible is filled with Big Stories of the Big God that we serve. One of those is the story of God’s people, the Israelites.

Joshua and the Israelites were on their way to their new home. There was just one thing in their way: The city of Jericho.

Jericho was surrounded by a big wall. The Israelites couldn’t get through the wall, and they couldn’t get over the wall. The people were sad. The wall was just too great.

But God is greater. God told Joshua and the people to march around the city every day for seven days. So on day one, they marched around the city. On day two, they marched around the city. On day three, they marched around the city. On day four, they marched around the city. On day five, they marched around the city. On day six, they marched around the city.

Then on day seven, they marched around the city. Not once, but seven times. After they finished marching, they lifted up their trumpets and let out a long blast.

At that moment, the walls fell down. The city of Jericho was now theirs.

God helped the Israelites. God is greater than any problem we have. Because He loves us we can obey him.

Simple Prayer:
Dear God, You are great. You love us. We want to obey you. Amen

Discussion Questions:
Wiggle Tamer: Play a few rounds of “Duck, Duck, Goose.”

Small Group Memory Verse: Form a line, with an adult leader at the front. Walk along a path together, saying the verse together as you walk.

Questions: What stopped the people from going into the city of Jericho? What did God tell the people to do? What happened when the people followed God’s orders? Is God greater than any problem we face?

Game: Recreate the wall of Jericho using building blocks. Retell the story, and at the right time, have those walls come tumbling down.

Make this week’s lesson real:
At Dinner: During mealtime, encourage your little ones. Talk about times you observed them being obedient and following directions that day. Remind them of the importance of listening to their parents.

Playing: Use building blocks to create a great wall like the one around the city of Jericho. Can you make it fall by walking around it? Does it stand strong if you are not touching it? Talk about how great God is while you tear down the wall together.

Bedtime: Read to your little ones the story of the fall of Jericho (Joshua 6:1-20) from a picture book or child-friendly version of the Bible.

Arts & Craft:
Items Needed: Paper, markers or crayons

Directions: Give your little ones paper and markers or crayons, and ask them to draw a picture of today’s story. Remind them that “There is no one greater than God,” “God loves us,” and “We can obey God.” See what their imagination and creativity come up with.
