God Gives Us The Courage To Be Honest
Lesson: Kids will say, “I’m not scared to tell the truth.”
Bible Passage: Genesis 26:1-10, Isaac and Abimelech
Today’s story comes to us from the Bible. (Hold up a Bible.) The Bible is God’s word to us, so we know that everything it says is true. (Open the Bible and set it down in front of you as you give the lesson.)
Everyone gets scared at some point. Whenever we feel afraid, we can remember that God is always with us and loves us. God’s perfect love can make our fear, disappear!
Once there was a man named Isaac. Isaac and his wife Rebekah were traveling through the land. God told Isaac to stay where he was. He told him not to be afraid, because God would take care of him.
But Isaac was in a new land and he was afraid. His wife Rebekah was very beautiful and he thought one of the men in the land might hurt him or kill him so they could have Rebekah for his wife. Isaac was afraid, so he told a lie.
He told everyone, “Rebekah is my sister.” It is never a good idea to lie. Isaac lived in the land a long time, telling everyone the lie that Rebekah was his sister and not his wife.
One day, the king of the land, Abimelech found out the truth. He was very angry with Isaac. He called for Isaac and said, “Why did you lie to me and to all my people?” Isaac admitted that he had been scared. That’s why he lied.
Isaac’s lie could have gotten him in a lot of trouble, but thankfully, the king was kind to him. We all get scared sometimes, just like Isaac. When you get scared, you might be tempted to lie. Don’t do it!
Ask God for courage. Say, “I’m not scared to tell the truth.”
Simple Prayer:
Dear God, Help us to never be afraid to tell the truth. Amen
Discussion Questions:
Wiggle Tamer: Play a few rounds of Duck Duck Goose.
Small Group Memory Verse: Say the verse together several times, using the hand motions. Now see if your preschoolers can say the verse without adult voices backing them up. (Adults: continue to participate in the motions.)
Questions: What did God tell Isaac? What did Isaac’s fear cause him to do? Who was Abimelech?
Game: Sit in a circle. Go around the room, sharing one true thing about yourself. It could be your favorite food, or a show you like to watch on television. It could be your dog’s name or your favorite toy. If kids get into this activity, you might want to go around the circle a few times. Talk about how easy it is to tell the truth when we are happy and having fun. But when we get scared, we might be tempted to lie. We can ask God for the courage to tell the truth even when we’re scared.
Arts & Craft: Tell The Truth Sheet
Items Needed: Paper, crayons, marker
Advanced Prep: Write at the top of each paper, “I’m not afraid to tell the truth.”
Directions: Ask each kid to tell you something true about themselves. Examples: “I have two sisters,” “I know my ABCs,” “My favorite food is pizza.”
Give each kid a sheet and explain what it says on the top. Invite them to draw a picture about the true thing they told you about, or another true thing about them.
Allow them to color as they feel inspired.
Remind them that God gives us the courage to say, “I’m not afraid to tell the truth.”
