Christmas Is All About Loving Jesus
Lesson: “I can love Jesus, because Jesus loves me.”
Bible Passage: Matthew 2:1-11, The Magi
Memory Verse: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you.” Luke 2:11a (NIrV)
Today’s story comes to us from the Bible. (Hold up a Bible.) The Bible is God’s word to us, so we know that everything it says is true. (Open the Bible and set it down in front of you as you give the lesson.)
It’s Christmas! Christmas is when we celebrate Jesus’ birthday.
Jesus loves me. I can love Jesus because Jesus loves me.
One of the things that usually happen at a birthday party is that the birthday boy or girl gets gifts. When Jesus was born, he got gifts too. Magi, or Wise Men traveled a long distance to find Jesus. They followed a star that led them to Jesus.
When they saw Jesus, the Magi bowed down and worshiped him. They gave him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. All of those are very expensive. Gold is a valuable medal, while frankincense and myrrh are expensive spices.
The Magi wanted to show Jesus their love by giving him the best that they had, just like God showed his love by giving us Jesus.
This Christmas, remember this: Jesus loves me. I can love Jesus because Jesus loves me.
Simple Prayer:
Dear God, Thank you for giving us Jesus; I can love Jesus because Jesus loves me. Amen.
Discussion Questions:
Wiggle Tamer: Play a few rounds of Duck Duck Goose.
Small Group Memory Verse: Have kids repeat the verse popcorn style. Point to kids randomly. Each time you point to a kid, he or she says the verse. (If a kid can’t repeat the verse, say a gentle “that’s okay” and move on to another kid.)
Questions: Who came to see Jesus bringing gifts? What gifts did the Magi bring? How can we show Jesus that we love him?
Game: Give kids the party hats they made in week 2. Pass out noisemakers. Have them blow on the noisemakers, then jump up and say “Happy Birthday, Jesus.”
Arts & Craft: Cupcake Ornaments
Items Needed: Simple Christmas ball ornaments, cupcake wrappers, glue, glitter, ribbon
Advanced Prep: None.
Directions: Create cupcake ornaments.
Give each kid a ball ornament and a cupcake wrapper. Help kids glue the ornament inside the cupcake wrapper so that the hanging element is at the top. Kids can “add sprinkles” to their cupcakes by placing glue on the ornament and dusting those spots with glitter. Tie a loop of ribbon at the top of each cupcake ornament.
